Breastfeeding:
All new mothers have to make the important choice of how to feed their baby.
Encouraging new mothers to breast-feed at work will pile the pressure on small businesses struggling to keep afloat, industry leaders have warned. The Government wants businesses to become ˜new mother friendly’, with special areas set aside for breast-feeding and fridges provided to store milk. Under the plans, to be set out in a public health White Paper later this week, employers will also be expected to be flexible over when breast-feeding women can take breaks.
Usually I hate when celebrities look way hotter than I could ever dream of looking at any point in life “ three months after they’ve given birth. Not only that, but they’re in bikinis at photo shoots.
Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr was back on the job just two months after giving birth to baby Flynn in January, but we didn’t know she was taking him to her jobs!
Know your legal rights. Under the Affordable Care Act, FLSA non-exempt employees (check your pay stub to confirm your status) are entitled to a private, clean, non-bathroom place to pump, and reasonable (although unpaid) break time. This law was signed into effect on March 23rd 2010 and establishes the minimum coverage nation-wide; it does not pre-empt your state laws if they provide even better employment protection. This law goes for moms who are pumping for babies up to one year of age. All companies are expected to comply, but companies with less than 50 employees can apply for exemption if they can prove that the application of the law causes undue hardship. To better understand reasonable break time, see our article by Kori Martin, JD, LLLL. If you are serving in the military or as a police officer, firefighter or any other non-traditional type job, you have a whole other set of rules to comply with! The new healthcare act, as of yet, does NOT include the military, they have their own policies and regulations. Finding a time and place requires a lot more ingenuity when you are on the range, in the back of aircraft for 8 hours, or deployed overseas. While many of the suggestions above will work to some degree, there are unique challenges to pumping while in the military serviceChina’s Consumer Association recently issued a report on the market for infant formula in 30 Chinese cities. It found only a low percentage of moms who were exclusively feeding their newborns breast milk in the first 6 months. Nearly a third of mothers fed their babies a mixture of breast milk and formula, while almost 14% of moms weren’t breast feeding at all in the first 6 months.
